Celebrating women at OBUS

Women’s Month

We are sister’s, daughters, wives, mothers, friends and individuals. We are strong, we are kind, we are loving, we are successful- we are women.

Maya Angelou’s writing pulls on the heart strings of many of her readers. In addition to her successful writing career, Maya Angelou was also a mother, civil rights activist, an actress, a singer, a songwriter to name but a few but most of all she was an inspiration.

This poem, ‘Phenomenal Woman’ captures the essence of today’s meaning of beauty and teaches us that even when we are compared to society’s standards of beauty, there is an inner beauty in each woman.

Phenomenal Woman

Pretty women wonder where my secret lies.
I’m not cute or built to suit a fashion model’s size
But when I start to tell them,
They think I’m telling lies.
I say,
It’s in the reach of my arms
The span of my hips,
The stride of my step,
The curl of my lips.
I’m a woman
Phenomenally.
Phenomenal woman,
That’s me.
